Sherrill Group 2013

From October 28 to November 1, 2013 a five member delegation of Americans used Siraj’s expertise and excellent guide, Mohammed Barakat, to expand our visit to Palestine, which we had started by participating in the Olive Harvest Campaign organized by JAI.

Based in Beit Sahour at the comfortable and homey El Beit Guesthouse, we traveled to Jerusalem, Qalqilia, Nablus, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, and the Jordan Valley.  Siraj arranged for us to meet with Israeli peace activists, with the Jabous Cultural Center in East Jerusalem, and with a family in Sheik Jarrah, where settlers have occupied half of the home of a Palestinian family.  From there, we visited the walled city of Qalqilia, the Palestinian House of Friendship in Nablus, and the Freedom Theater in Jenin before we crossed the Green Line into Israel.  There we met with Palestinian-Israeli leaders who advocate for the rights of Palestinian citizens of Israel and for displaced Palestinians inside Israel.  We made a stop at the holy site of Peter’s Rock on the Sea of Galilee, and then went on to witness the growth of settlements in the Jordan Valley and the Palestinian grassroots resistance to the theft of their land. It was a whirlwind tour due to the time limits of the group, but  Siraj managed to fulfil all of our requests and prepare us to return home to speak up for Palestine.
